“Meghnath ki Maya” – A Painting from the Ramayana Series by Rounak Rai
Illusion as Warfare, Faith as Resistance

In “Meghnath ki Maya”, Rounak Rai paints a haunting moment from the Yuddha Kanda of the Ramayana, where Indrajit (Meghnath) — the formidable son of Ravana — uses dark illusion (माया) to deceive Ram and Lakshman. The scene evokes a chilling blend of visual illusion, psychological warfare, and deep anguish, all rendered through Rai’s powerful folk-modern style.

The painting is dramatically split:

On the left, Lakshman is depicted in intense action, bow drawn high, aiming upward — not just in defense, but in confused desperation, trying to grasp what is real.

On the right, a ghostly swan-like chariot floats ominously through the sky, carrying a bound and tearful Sita, surrounded by Meghnath’s demonic illusions, flanked by deceptive figures of Ravana, Mandodari, and demons.

The background is a deep purple, evoking night, fear, and deception — a symbolic color that suggests the twilight between truth and illusion.

Rounak Rai’s signature style brings layers of symbolism:

Flat, angular figures that prioritize emotion over anatomy — showing agony, anger, and manipulation

Eyes wide open in every face, emphasizing the emotional intensity of the moment

The black silhouettes of demonic faces in the background heighten the sense of magical confusion

A handwritten Hindi passage at the bottom provides context — merging text and image, oral and visual narrative

This moment in the Ramayana is critical — Meghnath conjures a fake Sita being abducted to shatter Ram and Lakshman’s resolve. Rai doesn’t just show an illusion, he exposes the pain of belief shaken, the power of falsehood in war, and the fragility of the human heart — even in divine beings.

But while Meghnath’s magic is potent, Rai’s painting hints at something deeper: illusion can shake you, but not defeat you. The real Sita, the real truth, lies beyond this veil. Lakshman’s bow pulled taut is a sign of readiness — that even in the face of delusion, faith will rise and fight.

In “Meghnath ki Maya”, Rai doesn’t simply depict a moment — he questions perception, tests faith, and paints a poignant reminder that evil often hides in falsehood, but courage sees through the dark.
